Wellington hosts its third MUN conference
Wellington MUN 2025 - well done to all delegates!
Chosen by our General Secretary, Tiffany, this theme perfectly encapsulates the purpose of Model United Nations as a space for young people to engage with each other in trying to reach solutions to the most pressing challenges facing our world.
With only five years to go until 2030, the world is lagging behind expected progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, each of the committees at this year’s Wellington MUN conference linked their topics to particular SDGs to focus the public sphere on them. Issues discussed included water shortages, online hate-speech, conservation of endangered species, refugees, fast fashion and peacekeeping.
Our Security Council addressed the precarious situations in Syria and Myanmar.
Additionally, our first Historical Security Council attempted to find common ground in dealing with the troubles in Northern Ireland in the early 1970s and the Bhopal disaster of 1984. All delegates worked tirelessly to research the issues, represent their country faithfully, negotiate alliances, craft well-explained resolutions, and question each other.
(MUN) continues to thrive at Wellington. It is an important part of how we teach the value of global citizenship at Wellington. To this end, we have a dynamic and experienced pupil leadership team who have worked hard to realise their vision for this conference. A particular mention must go to Ms Giselle Slade for her tireless efforts to develop MUN at Wellington. We are sad that she will be leaving us this year but are hugely grateful for her efforts in growing MUN at our school over the last four years.
