AquaLions SSL Success: Where Fire Meets Water
On Saturday 18 October, our Wellington AquaLions made big waves at the 2025 Shanghai Swim League Round 1 with four of our swimmers smashing six SSL records.

Coach Miguel previously served as a coach for the Spanish National Swimming Federation and as World Aquatics' Director for Southeast Asia where he coached more than 50 international swimmers from 20 different countries who set hundreds of national records.

Our Platinum Squad, an elite group assembled by AquaLions at Wellington College Shanghai, comprises 11 swimmers, boys and girls, who are at the forefront of our team's quest for international representation. They have very high aims and ambitions, and their journey has been nothing short of remarkable.
With Wellington College Shanghai hosting both the Shanghai Swim League in October and ACAMIS Sr. in December, the AquaLions are elevating the league to new heights.
This past summer, four of our swimmers proudly represented their countries. Zackery T. (Year 12) showcased his talent at the World Championships.
Zavier T. (Year 10) not only won four individual medals and one in the relays but also set a Southeast Asian Age Group Aquatics Championships record in the 50m butterfly.
Shannon T. (Year 10) secured two medals and later broke a national record in the 200m butterfly for Malaysia, pending verification.
Valerie C. (Year 9), along with Zavier and Shannon, competed at the SEA Age in Singapore.

This week, Zavier and Shannon are competing in the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain from 22 to 31 October. We look forward to their continued growth. Additionally, the Southeast Games in Bangkok this December will see Zackery and Shannon face Asia's best, honouring their countries - and our school – in the pool.

Melody W. (Year 12) is gearing up for a busy few weeks on the international stage, competing in the SAS-ISB Invitational, the Hong Kong Age Group Long Course Championships, and the Singapore National Swimming Championships.

These accomplishments do not overshadow the remarkable summer performances by two more of our AquaLions at the CACSE Summer Age Group Championships in California, USA.
Tiffany L. (Year 10) not only secured victories but also broke four school records, contributing to a relay record at the championships.
Ettore C. (Year 11) earned medals in the breaststroke events, improving his times by over 5%. To put this in perspective, two more such improvements could qualify him for Italy's Olympic team.
The Platinum Squad also celebrated a new school record set by Melody X. (Year 11), a multifaceted talent excelling in both music and drama. She clocked a remarkable time of 1:12.93 in the 100m breaststroke at a national level meet in China.

Kane N. (Year 9) set a new SSL record in the 200m backstroke for the 13-14 age group and achieved two personal bests. Notably, he also set a school record in the 400m freestyle, with an impressive time of 4:11.81, during the Wellington Fall Challenge in September.
Fu Yan D. (Year 12) exemplifies a strong work ethic and commitment, consistently pushing his limits. This dedication was evident as he surpassed his personal bests at the ROCKSTARS Swim Championships in April and the Hong Kong Age Group Short Course Swimming Championships in February.
Summer L. (Year 11), our artistic champion, never fails to enthuse the team with her creativity and cheer.

The success of this group is not down to any one individual but rather the cohesion and collective spirit of the entire squad, which continuously elevates everyone's performance.
As the Platinum Squad continues to push boundaries in both swimming and academics, their dedication, teamwork, and drive set an inspiring example for others. Their journey continues, filled with the promise of many more remarkable achievements.
