Inspiring Our Future STEM Stars

2026-02-03

Last week, we offered pupils and parents a glimpse into the world of possibilities that a science education can bring. Our 'Natural Sciences Pathway to Elite Universities' event was an opportunity to inform and inspire.

Head of Science Thomas Edwards addressed an audience of nearly 70 pupils and parents. He described how our lessons often begin with questions, encouraging pupils to investigate, experiment and think for themselves—skills that extend far beyond the textbook.

Joshua Beard, Director of Higher Education and Careers, showed how this approach leads to real outcomes. He shared stories of Wellington pupils who have gone on to study STEM subjects at leading universities in the UK and around the world.

Pupils and alumni brought their own experiences to the discussion. Nathan Lu, now reading Natural Sciences at Cambridge, described the leap from Wellington to university life. He spoke about the importance of curiosity and engaging in hands-on experimentation— a mindset he developed during his time at Wellington.

Wellington's inaugural iGEM team then showcased their research on barnacle biofouling—a project shaped by independent investigation, teamwork and perseverance. Year 12 pupil Lifu reflected on his experience at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), and how it inspired him to launch a Scientific Research Society so others could share in that sense of discovery.

We were also joined by Professors Xufeng Kou and Dengji Zhao from ShanghaiTech University, who introduced new research opportunities for Wellington pupils—proof that science here doesn't end at the classroom door.

Events like this are a reminder: at Wellington, science is never just a subject; it's a launchpad. With the support of our community, we're ready to help every pupil turn curiosity into opportunity—wherever their ambitions take them.
