Every child brings a unique language background, learning style and set of experiences to the classroom. At Wellington Shanghai, we believe their educational journey should be equally diverse and adaptable, ensuring that every child—whatever their starting point—can find their own rhythm for growth.

In the Primary School, this vision takes shape through two parallel pathways: the Mainstream Pathway, where English is the primary language of instruction, and the Dual Language Pathway, which offers a balanced mix of English and Chinese.

The key difference lies in the depth of language immersion and the approach to teaching, allowing us to tailor learning to each pupil's needs and their family's long-term aspirations.

The Mainstream Pathway(English-led Instruction)

In this pathway, English is the official language of instruction, with Chinese taught as a core subject. Chinese classes are grouped by ability—First Language, Second Language, or Foreign Language—ensuring the level of challenge and content is appropriate for each pupil. The overall language ratio is 80% English to 20% Chinese.

The Dual Language Pathway (Balanced English and Chinese)

The Dual Language Pathway runs from Year 1 to Year 6, with immersive teaching in a 60% English, 40% Chinese ratio. Chinese is not only taught as a subject, but is also used as a medium of instruction—pupils use Chinese in several lessons, including Chinese, Maths and Inquiry. This approach enables them to truly think and express themselves in Chinese, while keeping pace with their peers in English. This pathway is well-suited to families who wish to build a strong foundation in Chinese during primary school and lay the groundwork for the IGCSE and IB Bilingual Diplomas in the future.

Two Pathways, One Standard

Whichever pathway a pupil follows, they will thrive in a challenging and supportive environment in the Primary School. The curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum, adapted for international learners, while the Chinese programme is informed by the Chinese National Curriculum.Beyond core subjects such as STEM and English, the curriculum also incorporates the arts, computing, and physical education, with a strong focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration.

All pupils participate in PE, music, art, drama, and other subjects, and all benefit from the full range of resources that Wellington's holistic education provides. As they progress through the school, pupils gradually develop greater independence and confidence, preparing them for more self-directed inquiry learning in Secondary School.

We encourage parents to make their choice based on their child's language foundation, learning habits, and long-term development plans. If your child has been exposed to Chinese from an early age and your family aspires to a bilingual education, the Dual Language Pathway is a natural choice. For those just starting out with Chinese, the Mainstream Pathway also offers robust language support and cultural immersion.For pupils entering Year 2 or above, a foundational proficiency in Chinese is required for admission into the Dual Language Pathway. Expatriate pupils with no prior knowledge of Chinese may find this pathway challenging, as Maths and Inquiry are taught in both English and Chinese.
