Junior schools football tournament

13 Jun 2016
International kinderdagten in Shanghai Over the previous two weekends Wellington College participated in the Junior Schools Football Tournament at YCIS Pudong. We had a strong presence with 3 under 9s boys teams, an under 11s girls and an under 11s boys team travelling over to compete. Up first was our under 9s boys with three teams in action one of which is an under 8s team playing a year above their age group. All of the boys were exceptional over both weekends and did themselves and the college proud. Congratulations to Wellington Black who came away with the trophy as overall winners. The victory was well deserved and special praise goes to Alex Lu for his marauding runs through the middle, Dylan Thomas and James Wareham whose quick closing down and strong tackling denied the opposition any time on the ball. Finally, Paris Garza Reyes with his long range shooting causing a threat throughout. After a disappointing first weekend the under 11s girls rediscovered their form and didn’t lose a single game during the second Sunday. Jade Franetzki and Charlotte Sedgwick were lively going forward with Lucy Percival and Kamerin Garza Reyes keeping things under control at the back. After fighting back the girls eventually finished second overall one point behind the winners. The highlight of the day was a 4-0 victory over local rivals Dulwich College Shanghai. The under 11s boys also played exceptionally well- losing only one game during the entire tournament. The Wellington midfield proved dominant throughout with Shae Cahill on his debut running the show in the center. George Flint and Hugo Field caused the opposition all kinds of trouble on the flanks. Going into the final game, against Dulwich, Wellington needed a victory to clinch the tournament. However, despite peppering the Dulwich goal for the duration of the game they were unable to find the breakthrough and the game finished 0-0 leaving Wellington second overall.
