School uniform policy
Nursery to Year 11
Pupils are expected to have enough uniform items to ensure that they can wear a newly laundered item for every day of school. A full uniform list for each of the different schools is available online and in the joining information. Every article of clothing must be clearly marked with the pupil’s name.
• All clothing must be neat and clean.
• No frayed, torn or excessively worn items.
• No non-uniform sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets, etc.
• Shirts should be tucked in at all times.
• Skirts length should be appropriate for a professional environment. Alterations to the skirt are not permitted. Girls are encouraged to wear black shorts underneath the skirt, which should not be longer than the length of the skirt itself.
• Socks should be navy blue or black and be ankle or Knee length – Socks over the knee are not permitted.
• Jackets and coats may be worn to and from school and during break; they may not be worn in class. All pupils in years 1-8 are required to wear school uniform jackets and coats. Pupils in years 9 and up may wear any plain black or navy blue jacket. Hoodies are not permitted at any time (including Wellington branded hoodies).
• Shorts are allowed in Primary school (Years 1-8). In Secondary School (years 9-13), shorts are not permitted. From the academic year 24/25 shorts will not be permitted in Secondary School (years 7-13)
Footwear
Pupils are expected to wear black leather shoes during the school day (not boots). Early Years pupils may wear black plimsolls. Shoes may not have any prominent branding on them and must be kept clean and polished. For safety reasons, open-toed shoes and stiletto heels are not permitted. For all sporting and performing arts activities, specific footwear for each discipline must be worn.
Name tapes
Every article of clothing must be marked internally with the pupil’s name and year group. Visible naming or embroidery on any uniform item is not permitted. Footwear should also be marked accordingly.
Jewellery/Make-up
Jewellery may include one or more of the following:
• Earrings should be discrete and professional in nature.
• A wristwatch.
• A discreet necklace or chain that must be tucked inside the school shirt and not visible.
Pupils must remove all jewellery before playing sport. They may also be directed to remove jewellery before other lessons and activities such as science experiments, drama rehearsals or when working in the art and design studios.
Stickers, teeth gems, message buttons and visible tattoos, body piercings, etc. are not acceptable at school.
Excessive make up not permitted.
Hair
Hair is to be clean, neat and tidy and not hang over the eyes.
Haircuts or styles may not be ostentatious or distracting; no lines, patterns, multi-levels, excessive use of hair products etc. are permitted.
Hair colour must be consistent with a natural colour, i.e. no blue or pink dying/highlights
Hair should be tied up for health and safety reasons in specific activities e.g. Sports activities, DT / science practical lessons, etc
Ribbons, clips, bands and ‘scrunchies’ should be navy blue, black or school uniform.
Pupils should assume a smart, subdued appearance that is not a source of distraction. The Head of School shall be the final arbiter in all questions of adherence to school guidelines. The College reserves the right to require pupils whose appearance does not meet expectations to leave school until those expectations are met.
Sixth Form (Years 12 & 13)
Sixth form pupils are not obliged to wear the school uniform. They are, however, still expected to present themselves in a manner that promotes a sense of pride in our school.
• All pupils are expected to wear a suit or equivalent (e.g. formal jacket and trousers).
• Ties should be worn with dress shirts.
• Shoulders should not be bare and skirts should be at least knee-length.
• The length of shorts/skirts seems to be an area in which pupils find difficult to navigate.
• Pupils should be aware of how these items of clothing could rise/move whilst a pupil walks around the College and how this could lead to a situation whereby the item of clothing is deemed to be inappropriate for school.
• Jewellery should be kept to a minimum. Trainers/flip-flops, denim, and sportswear (including hoodies) are not allowed to be worn.
