Sport at Wellington Shanghai plays an integral role in our pupils’ lives. We provide an inclusive and nurturing environment that inspires them to be resilient and independent learners as they develop a lifelong passion for physical activity.
We offer a variety of world-class sporting facilities, and our team includes specialised coaches and physical education teachers, as well as partnerships with professional coaches who assist in the development of all sports. Our sports staff support every childin fulfilling their sporting pathway at every level of skill or interest, whether recreational or competitive. Throughout the academic year, pupils have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sporting activities, both athome and abroad, competing against leading international and bilingual schools. They take part in compulsory school sports conferences such as SISAC (ShanghaiInternational Schools Athletic Conference), CISSA (China International SchoolsSporting Association), SSL (Shanghai Swim League), SSSA (Shanghai School Sports Association), FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia) and ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools), covering sports like football, swimming, volleyball and basketball. Additionally, we offer a range of supplementary competitions in our core and developing core sports, including netball, rugby (touch, tag and contact), tennis, ultimate frisbee and badminton.
We embed and implement our three main aims of ‘sport for all, developing people and building community’ in our sports programme and inspire our pupils to develop an interest in sport beyond school.

Basketball is offered to pupils of all ages at Wellington across a variety of programs. Wellington pupils have opportunities to participate in basketball in physical education classes, CCA, representative sport, and Wellington Extra Sport programs. In PE lessons, pupils are exposed to the fundamentals of the game, developing individual skills and an understanding of beginner to intermediate team concepts in game-centred activities. In the CCA program, those pupils who wish to further develop their basketball skills and knowledge can do so with like-minded peers, with the focus on developing higher-order basketball skills and more advanced team tactics and concepts. The representative sport program enables pupils from U9s to U19s to participate for Wellington College against other international and bilingual schools in China and abroad. The Wellington Extra Sport basketball program is an after-school community program tailored towards those pupils wishing to start or extend their basketball journey. The pinnacle of basketball participation at Wellington is in the U19 ACAMIS (Association of China & Mongolia International Schools) competitions, and invitational competitions across Asia such as the U19 and U15 FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia) tournaments held in destinations such as Thailand and Korea. Pupils in these programs are able to participate in team trainings three times a week while also being able to attend individual skill development training sessions before and/or after school, led by specialist Wellington basketball coaches. The U19 (Years 9 and above) basketball teams at Wellington also participate in the local SISAC (Shanghai International Schools Athletics Conference) league, and SSSA (Shanghai Schools Sports Association) league, giving them multiple opportunities to represent the school. Wellington aims to field at least 4 teams (two boys’ and two girls’ teams) in each of these competitions. The U14 (Years 7-8-9) boys and girls teams represent the school in CISSA (Conference of International Schools in Shanghai Association), a developmental league which focuses on participation and player improvement. Wellington had six teams in this competition and aims to continue to have a high number of pupils representing the school in this age category. The U14 teams train and/or play twice a week, while they are also able to join the individual skill development training sessions before and/or after school. This year the Year 7-9 pupils can join the Next Stars Program, which is a selective basketball program offering a high-performance pathway for our developing basketball players. Individuals in this age group who show great potential and are willing to commit to the extended training program will be selected to join. The U9 (Years 3-4) and U11 (Years 5-6) Wellington teams have opportunities throughout the year to represent the school in SSSA competitions which are held in various school locations across Shanghai on Saturday mornings. Pupils in the CCA basketball programs are invited to join these teams when the tournaments are scheduled. In addition to the inclusive school basketball offerings, Wellington Extra Sport basketball is held on Saturday mornings, led by Wellington basketball coaches and physical education teachers. It is open to all Wellington pupils from Years 1-8.
Developing Core Sports
We offer three developing core sports in which pupils can compete at the local, regional and international level.
Supplementary Sports
Wellington College Shanghai provides opportunities for students to participate in our supplementary sports.
Competitive Sports Programmes
Our Competitive Sports Programmes attempt to provide for as many sports as can reasonably be supported and is central to the organizations of which the school is a member. Our competitive sports programme feeds into local, regional, and international conferences, including CISSA, SISAC, SSSA, ACAMIS, FOBISIA and SSL. These organizations cover a multitude of sports open to all ages and genders and we run competitive teams at different age groups across the school. Our sporting schedule is seasonal, as dictated by our sporting associations, but we also run strong, year-long football and swimming programmes, headed by full-time Performance coaches.
Year-Long programmes – Football and Swimming
Our year-long programmes are our ‘flagship’ programmes and are overseen by our Head of Football and Head of Aquatics.
Both programmes are inclusive and are structured to meet the needs of all of our pupils across the school. They cater for the whole school and also are part of our elite pathway, where we create opportunities for our high-potential performers access to professional academies in Europe, USA and Australia, as well as supporting ambitions to perform at the collegiate level in the USA.
