Wellington shines at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup
Nine Wellington Shanghai swimmers had the experience of a lifetime competing in the Swimming World Cup held in Shanghai 18-20 October at the Oriental Sports Center.
Congratulations to Summer, Amdo, Alex, SengJoon, Melody W, Melody X, Shannon, Ettore and Noe for this amazing achievement!
The open event brought together top swimmers from all over the world including champions from the Paris Olympics, such as Chinese Olympic medalists Pan Zhanle and Tang Qianting and French Olympic champion Leon Marchand.
Our pupils competed across the disciplines with amazing results - setting eight school records over the three days!
We must particularly highlight the accomplishments of two of our swimmers - Shannon T (Year 9) and Noe G (Year 13).
Noe finished first in his heat of the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.09.
Shannon reached the finals of both the 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle finishing 6th and 8th respectively, a result which rocketed her into the top 50 in the World Cup ranking for this year.
"It was an amazing experience," Shannon shared, "To swim against the best in the world has been my dream."
"I remember how I felt when I won silver in the Swimming World Cup," shares Wellington AquaLions Coach Alex Wong. "Watching our pupils compete on one of the biggest stages in the swimming world brought back the same excitement. So pumped for them!"
"Our swim programme has really gone from strength to strength in the last few years," shares AquaLions Head Coach Miguel Alvarado. "Our swimmers have worked extremely hard from top to bottom; our AquaLions show they deserve to be in the pool with the world's best!"
It's already been a big year for the AquaLions. On October 12, we hosted the first leg of the Shanghai Swim League here in our home pool. At the event Wellington swimmers Tiffany and Summer placed 1st and 2nd in the Girls 200m Backstroke (13-14 age); and as a team Wellington placed 4th overall.
Be You. Swim Fast!
