Wellington Shanghai heralds its 10th anniversary year
Celebrating 10 years of Building
A Global Community
Since our founding, the College has grown into a thriving global community of over 1,600 pupils and 400 dedicated staff and faculty as well as alumni spread across the world. Today, we are proud to be known as the leading international school in Shanghai as well as one of the top-ranked in the world.
In the past decade, Wellington has marked many key milestones on its journey. It began in earnest with our groundbreaking ceremony and the strategic partnerships we forged with the Lujiazui Group and Wellington College in the UK. In 2015, we welcomed Ms Anna Shotbolt, then First Secretary and Head of Education and Skills of the UK Department for International Trade. By 2017, we were already celebrating our first cohort of graduating pupils.
A year later, UK Prime Minister Theresa May visited our College to see our pupils give presentations on their science projects. In 2019, we expanded our provision for our youngest learners with the grand opening of the Wellington College International Shanghai Early Years Centre. Each step brought us closer to realising our vision of building a world-class school right here in the heart of Shanghai.
Along the way, Wellington has remained steadfast in its commitment to holistic education in academics, sports and the arts. Our pupils consistently excel, achieving outstanding examination scores and gaining admission to top-ranked universities, like Oxford, Cambridge, Brown and Caltech.
Beyond academics, Wellington develops the whole child, nurturing their intellectual curiosity, creativity, character and wellbeing, all firmly rooted in our Wellington values of kindness, responsibility, respect, courage and integrity.
“Wellington has grown in so many profound ways these past 10 years, and I don’t just mean enrolment numbers,” said Brendon Fulton, Master of Wellington College. “With each successive year, our network has grown wider and stronger. We are increasingly better equipped to be a force for positive change in our community and the wider world, and that is the ultimate goal of a holistic education.”
This year, there will be several celebratory events taking place on campus and around the world. At the end of October, we will launch our inaugural Wellbeing Festival, the first of its kind in China, which will see our pupils and community members engage in workshops, talks and a host of other activities guided by themes, like Be Active, Be Learners, Be Connectors, Be Mindful and Be Changemakers.
This unwavering commitment to pupil wellbeing has long been a defining feature of the Wellington DNA. Its roots trace back to Wellington College in the UK, which in 2006 became the first school of its kind to enshrine pupil wellbeing in its mission, earning it the nickname ‘Wellbeington’.
The Wellbeing Festival will culminate in a 10th Anniversary Celebration Day on 1 November, which will see our valued community partners on campus for a special commemorative event. The day will conclude with a 10th-anniversary outdoor concert to bring our community together.
At the heart of our school is our community, which radiates from our home in the Qiantan New Bund Area to the rest of the world. For 10 years, we have nurtured a community of caring citizens who engage in ongoing charity and outreach activities that benefit communities locally and globally, demonstrating Wellington’s unique ability to make a positive impact.
“We pride ourselves not only on our tightly knit community of pupils, parents and teachers but also the positive impact that we have beyond our school,” says Friends of Wellington Chairman and founding parent Felix Zhang.
As we begin our 10th, we reflect with gratitude on the incredible families, staff and partners who have joined us on this journey and made this journey possible. It is thanks to them that Wellington has blossomed into the thriving institution it is today.
We look forward to an exciting academic year. Rest assured, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to join us along the way, culminating in the 10th Anniversary special edition of our annual Summer Festival in May.
Whether you are a current community member, alumnus or prospective family or member of staff, we invite you to celebrate 10 years of building a global community with us!
