Wellington receives accolades from BritCham and Kinglead

03 Mar 2023

We are pleased to announce that Wellington Shanghai has been selected as finalists by the British Chamber of Commerce in this year’s China Schools Awards. Awarded annually, BritCham’s China Schools Awards recognise excellence in every aspect of a school’s mission, from diversity and inclusion to pastoral care and so much more. This year, the College was selected as finalists for both its the BritCham’s ‘Science and Technology’ and ‘Students for Sustainability’ Awards.

“I could not be more pleased to see our school get recognised in these two areas. Our effort to be a leader in STEM and EdTech is an immense point of pride. And our sustainability initiatives are a shining example of how our community puts the Wellington Values of Respect and Responsibility into action every day,” says Brendon Fulton, Master of Wellington Shanghai.

Thanks to our outstanding Science and Technology Department, Wellington pupils can explore the cosmos in our inflatable Starlab planetarium. They can examine the intersections of hardware and software with competitions in the First Lego League, programmable drones or AWS DeepRacers in our robotics lab. They can learn about the fundamental building blocks of nature in our fully equipped chemistry labs. Moreover, our annual Science Week takes the whole College on a journey of discovery through scientific demonstrations and interdisciplinary activities.

“We strive to make our STEM offering a challenging, enriching and, most importantly, fun experience for our pupils. Hopefully, we will inspire them to one day be leaders in the scientific community. So, needless to say, being selected as finalists for BritCham’s ‘Science and Technology’ award is a big honour for the entire College,” says Kalev Kurg, Director of Science and Technology.

Wellington has been going to great lengths to conserve resources and reduce waste on campus. This academic year, for instance, we have cut down on single-use plastics by giving all pupils a reusable water bottle and installing more drinking water stations around campus. This year also saw initiatives like our green plate programme and meat-free days in our dining hall. So far, these actions alone have saved over 4 million litres of water, reduced CO2 emissions by 10,000 kg and resulted in the planting of 167 trees. We are also literally planting the seeds for a greener future with our new organic garden, where pupils can grow their own herbs and vegetables as they learn about sustainable farming practices and dietary habits.

“I am so proud of all the things our pupils, parents and teachers have done at Wellington to be selected as a finalist for BritCham’s ‘Students for Sustainability’ award,” says Dr Louise Gray, Wellington’s Global Sustainability Coordinator. “Sustainability is a collective effort, and it requires fights on multiple fronts. Our pupil community has shown itself to be fully energised and engaged in our efforts to build a more sustainable future.”

The British Chamber of Commerce is not the only organisation that has recognised Wellington lately. Kinglead, one of China’s most reputable school ranking services recently released its ‘China International School Innovative Competitiveness Top 100’ list. We are thrilled to share that Wellington Shanghai has ranked number 5 in China and number 2 in Shanghai! These rankings are yet another testament to our ongoing commitment to excellence in education.

Big thanks to all who had a part in earning these honours for the College. We look forward to receiving more accolades next year.
