Wellington and Hiba pupils shine in multiple competitions

At Wellington College China schools, 'Be You. Be More' is more than just a slogan. We bring this aspirational spirit to everything we do. Every year, across all our schools, our pupils amaze us with what they achieve in competitions at the local, national and even global level. This year, our pupils performed spectacularly in maths, science, economics, spelling, debate and so much more.

 

Exceptional performance in

mathematics

 

Across several Wellington College China schools, pupils clinched top awards.

 

In the Senior School category, Wellington Shanghai demonstrated impressive mathematical prowess, winning 36 gold medals in the UK Mathematics Trust Junior Maths Challenge (UKMT-JMC) and 6 gold medals in the UKMT-IMC. They also achieved Honour Roll of Distinction (placing in the top 1% worldwide) in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 8 and 12.

Wellington College Tianjin pupils secured 5 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal in the UK Mathematics Trust Senior Maths Challenge (UKMT-SMC) and 11 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals in the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Maths Challenge (UKMT-IMC).

Hiba Academy Shanghai pupils achieved impressive results in the UKMT-SMC competition, winning 1 Best in School, 3 Best in Year, 3 Silver Award, and 2 Bronze Awards. In the AMC, 6 primary pupils ranked in the Top 1%, 4 in the Top 5%, and 1 achieved a Perfect Score, with 20 pupils receiving Outstanding Performance. A secondary pupil also received the Global Perfect Score Award. They also won a gold medal in the team relay race at the Maths Tournament at Berkeley (Junior) and received individual gold and bronze medals.

Pupils from Wellington College Hangzhou also achieved remarkable success, triumphing in a variety of competitions such as AMC 8, UKMT-JMC, Math League Competition, Australian Mathematics Competition, Kangaroo Math Competition (primary division), and Caribou Math Competition. In total, they won over 400 awards, with many placing at the very top of global rankings.

Hiba Nantong pupils delivered outstanding results too, earning 31 medals in the Australian Mathematics Competition; 10 medals including one Top Gold in the primary division of Kangaroo Math Competition; 5 global gold awards, 2 global silver awards, 1 best school honour award and best grade honour awards in the UKMT-JMC.

Rising stars in the

sciences and economics

 

Our pupils excelled across a wide range of academic disciplines, from physics and biology to economics and computer science.

Wellington Tianjin pupils earned gold and silver medals in prestigious international competitions such as the British Physics Olympiad, British Biology Olympiad, the Physics Bowl, Oxford University Computational ChallengeCanadian Chemistry Competition and the National Economics Challenge.

Wellington Shanghai pupils demonstrated their talents, securing a 3rd place finish in the global finals of the prestigious Diamond Challenge for entrepreneurial innovation.

The pupils from Hiba Academy Shanghai excelled in the British Biology Olympiad, winning 2 Global Gold Prizes and 1 Global Silver Prize, and in the United Kingdom Chemistry Olympiad, winning 1 Global Silver Medal. Furthermore, they received 3 Regional Excellence Awards and 1 Individual High-score Award in the American Computer Science League.

Over 40 pupils from the Senior Schools of Wellington College Hangzhou achieved excellent results in various science competitions, including the Junior Science Olympiad of Canada (JSOC), the Big Science Competition (BSC), the Junior Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (JCCO) and the Physics Bowl, among others. The pupils' outstanding performances have earned them numerous accolades, including 2 gold medals, 7 silver medals, 15 bronze medals, and many distinction medals.

Our Hiba Nantong pupils did an amazing job in the National Economics Challenge, earning prestigious accolades such as the National Top Scoring Individual Silver Award, Regional Top Scoring Team Awards in both Macroeconomics and Microeconomics, a Regional Individual Distinction Award in Macroeconomics and the Top Rookie Individual Award

 

Additionally, one of our year 6 pupils earned one individual gold medal in the prestigious CREATE US Open Robot Competition

 

 

Cultural and literary excellence

 

Our pupils have excelled in a range of literary competitions, from Chinese language to Chinese-English debate and creative writing.

 

This academic year, pupils from Wellington Shanghai placed among the top finishers in the Shanghai Cup Chinese Debate Competition and the Shanghai Pudong Foreign Student Chinese Talent Showcase.

Meanwhile, two debaters from Wellington College Tianjin were awarded the "Star Speaker" award at the COBIS x Debate Mate Debate.

The debate team from Hiba Academy Shanghai once again took the podium at the National Primary and Secondary School Chinese Debate Championship (Shanghai Division), winning the championship in the Junior High School category and securing the award for Best Debater with their impressive oratory skills.

Pupils from Hiba Academy Hangzhou also achieved great success, earning numerous accolades in competitions such as the Arete Cup Asian Argumentative Writing Contest, Hippo English Assessment, English Spelling Bee and the World Scholars' Cup.

Hiba Nantong also participated in the World Scholars' Cup, bringing home an impressive haul of 5 gold and 6 silver team awards, as well as 16 gold and 16 silver individual awards.

 

Well-rounded achievements in

charity, arts and sports

 

A holistic education means nurturing excellence not only in academics but also in sports and community service. Wellington and Hiba pupils once again impressed on all counts. Hiba Shanghai pupils were recognised with the ‘Young Visionary’ and ‘Outstanding Public Welfare Society’ awards in the Fosun Foundation Youth Visionary Award selection. Additionally, one of the pupils involved in the school's "Loutang Migrant Worker Children Support Project" stood out from 400 candidates and was selected for the prestigious Columbia University's Fellowship for Change (FFC).

Hiba Shanghai pupils also excelled at the Shanghai Youth Sports League Swimming Competition and the Hiba Cup: Yangtze River Delta Youth Swimming Invitational, bringing home 12 gold, 14 silver and 9 bronze medals, as well as winning the team championship. They also achieved success in the "Hiba Cup" 2024 SSSA Fencing Invitational, taking home the team second-place overall. One pupil even earned the title of Overall Champion in the 14-15 age group RX category at the CrossFit Open Competition in China.

This academic year also saw the first-time participation of Hiba Nantong School's grade 7 and 8 pupils in the Shanghai Municipal Sports League, where they collectively earned 5 medals across a variety of events. Furthermore, a grade 8 pupil from Hiba Academy Nantong, stood out among 240 dancers in the national competition "Super Dancers" with her dance ‘Growing Up in the Sunshine’, and became the only dancer directly qualified for the 2024 finals.
