The Growth Mindset
HORIZON VIDEO
With each video in our Horizon series, we explore learning in action. We talk with teachers, parents and pupils from our schools in Tianjin, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nantong, taking a deep dive into the latest trends and issues in education. It’s part of our ongoing efforts to create a community where our pupils can thrive.
GROWTH
The theme of our third Horizon Video is
The Growth Mindset
What is a ‘growth mindset’? A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort and learning. In today’s fast-changing world, encouraging a growth mindset is especially important, as it helps children face challenges with confidence, adapt to new situations and remain enthusiastic about learning—preparing them well for the future.
In this video, we visit Wellington College International Shanghai to see how a growth mindset is nurtured from the Early Years, through Primary School and into Secondary School. We spoke in depth with both teachers and pupils to find answers to the following questions:
★
Are we born with the ability to learn, or is it developed over time?
★
What approaches do teachers use to foster a growth mindset in their pupils?
★
How do teachers sustain pupils’ enthusiasm for learning in the long term?
★
How can pupils be encouraged to face mistakes and setbacks positively in their learning?
★
How do teachers involve parents in the school’s educational philosophy?
