Pupil Sustainability Committee launches first-ever Fair

Alex
Year 11,
Wellington College International Shanghai proudly hosted its first-ever Sustainability Fair, a pupil-led initiative created by the Sustainability Committee as part of our Earth Month celebrations. Held in the Sports Hall, the fair brought together pupils, staff, and five external partner organisations in a united effort to raise environmental awareness and encourage meaningful action within our community. The event was launched to provide a platform where pupils could engage directly with sustainability in practical, interactive, and inspiring ways.

As the Sustainability Committee, our mission is to embed sustainable thinking into the everyday life of our school. We want pupils to take the lead in shaping a greener future, and this fair reflected that commitment. With five different partner organisations in attendance—each offering hands-on activities, games, showcases, and conversations—pupils had the opportunity to interact, learn, and reflect on their role in building a more sustainable world. Another highlight of the event was our custom designed sustainable merchandise, including water bottles with eco-friendly packaging, pens and Bluetooth speakers made with recycled cork, and a polar bear figure created using sustainable materials—all thoughtfully designed to reflect the values we champion.

Over the past year, we have collaborated with departments across the College to create real change— most notably by reviewing and shifting our vendors and suppliers to those that follow sustainable practices. The Sustainability Fair was a culmination of these efforts, serving not only as a celebration of what we’ve achieved, but as a starting point for future initiatives that will continue to build momentum across our school community.

As part of Earth Month, planning for the Fair began with early brainstorming sessions and committee discussions. It quickly evolved into a collaborative effort that involved staff support, partner outreach, logistics planning, and promotion. On the big day, the Sports Hall was transformed into a vibrant and engaging space that inspired conversations, action, and pride in what we can achieve together.
Beyond our campus, we also had the opportunity to represent Wellington Shanghai at Covestro’s Little Earth Guardians event at Crystal Plaza, Qiantan. This city-wide initiative brought pupils together to explore climate action through interactive eco-missions, creative exhibits, and collaborative learning. By participating, our committee extended Wellington’s sustainability voice into the broader Shanghai community— connecting with other young changemakers and sharing the work we’ve done within our own school environment.

What we learned along the way is this: no matter how big or small, every action has the power to create change. From adjusting daily habits to advocating for systemic improvements, we are hopeful that the Sustainability Fair is just the beginning of a wider movement across our school—one that brings us closer to a more sustainable and conscious future.
