Our latest Grand Edventure: New Zealand and Samoa

Phil Burnell

The Grand Edventure provided our pupils with a direct application of their classroom knowledge in the real world. Exploring the majestic Milford Sound, witnessing geothermal phenomena at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, and delving into marine biology through activities like swimming with dolphins, underscored the practical aspects of their Geography, Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS), and Economics studies. Each day offered pupils invaluable insights into the delicate interplay between natural landscapes and human activity, promoting a profound appreciation for environmental sustainability.

Our journey was not merely educational but also rich in cultural experiences. In New Zealand, pupils engaged deeply with Māori traditions, learning the significance of indigenous practices and actively participating in immersive cultural activities. This was mirrored in Samoa, where our group was warmly welcomed by local communities. Our pupils had the chance to forge meaningful connections with the people of Samoa and to appreciate the Fa'a Samoa way of life. Such experiences fostered respect for diverse cultures while instilling Wellington’s values of courage, respect and kindness.

Our commitment to service learning was evident as pupils partook in various conservation projects, including observing wildlife at the Otago Peninsula and participating in marine conservation by swimming with dolphins and supporting reef snorkelling in Samoa. This hands-on involvement emphasised the importance of responsible travel and environmental stewardship, reinforcing lessons on sustainability and ethics from their Environmental Studies curriculum.

Highlights of the trip included a breathtaking kayak expedition through Milford Sound, a scenic drive up to Queenstown capped by an exciting luge race, exploring awe-inspiring glowworm caves in Waitomo and a fascinating tour of the Hobbiton movie set. The experience culminated with a celebration of the Lunar New Year atop Auckland’s Sky Tower. The experience culminated with a celebration of the Lunar New Year atop Auckland's Sky Tower. This blended cultural tradition with modern festivity, creating a dynamic backdrop for reflection and celebration.

Throughout the journey, pupils demonstrated growth in confidence, social skills and global awareness, reflecting the holistic learning objectives of Wellington’s Educational Excursion program. Workshops on critical thinking, service projects benefiting local wildlife, and discussions on global environmental challenges gave pupils a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper connection to the global community.
Finally, we extend our sincerest gratitude to the dedicated staff, including Dr Charles Debieux, Mr Martin O’Brian, Ms Tarra Behr and Ms Jade Zhou. Their leadership and enthusiasm were pivotal in making this trip a monumental success. We also thank the parents for their unwavering support and the pupils for their spirited participation.
As we reflect on this incredible journey, we are reminded of the enduring impact of such immersive educational experiences. The Grand Edventure 2025 has exceeded our educational and experiential goals. It has enriched our pupils, teaching them to be thoughtful, action-oriented global citizens.
Stay tuned for details on how we are shaping tomorrow’s leaders with our next Grand Edventure!
