Mastering Mandarin, embracing Chinese culture

Sue Wang
We offer compulsory core courses tailored to different proficiency levels: foreign language for beginners, second language for intermediate learners and first language for native speakers. To broaden our pupils’ horizons, we offer highly enriching elective courses in Chinese Culture as well.
As pupils enter years 10 and 11, they can opt to continue their Chinese studies via foreign, second or first language courses, which ultimately lead to Cambridge exam qualifications. We also incorporate enrichment material that is aligned with the IB Diploma Programme to prepare our pupils for further study.
For our IB pupils, we offer more advanced Mandarin ab initio, Chinese B and Chinese A courses. These are available at Standard or Higher Level. We also offer guidance on the IB’s Extended Essay component as well as opportunities to gain Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
Opportunities for cultural immersion
Alongside our robust academic programme, we provide many opportunities got immersive cultural experiences. For pupils in years 7-9, our optional Chinese Culture class builds greater cultural literacy. Our CCAs also allow our pupils to engage directly with Chinese traditions and customs.
We also collaborate with Wellington’s Geography Department to organise educational excursions. Our recent trip to Yangshuo and Guilin, for instance, provided our pupils with an invaluable opportunity to experience China’s rich culture in situ among some spectacular natural landscapes.
Additionally, our Chinese Magazine allows our IB pupils to earn CAS credit as they hone their editorial and leadership capabilities.
Consistently outstanding results
Pupils who study Chinese at Wellington also enjoy countless opportunities to shine. For instance, our Secondary School Chinese Debate Team regularly wins accolades like ‘Best Debater’ at elite competitions such as the Zongheng Cup, National Championships and the Chinese Cup.
Our pupils also deliver outstanding performances on their exams. In 2024's IGCSE exams, an exceptional 85% of the cohort attained top A/A* grades, demonstrating mastery of language skills. IB outcomes were equally impressive, with 87% of 2024's graduates scoring 6 or above. Some even achieved perfect scores. These scores inspire lots of confidence in how our 2024-25 cohorts will perform.
Wellington College International Shanghai's Chinese language program is more than just rigorous academics; it is a gateway to a wider world. Our pupils gain fluency in another language as they build the cultural competency that will make them an asset wherever they go in life. It is central to our mission of nurturing learners, connectors and changemakers who aspire to be global citizens.
