In case you missed it | UN Day & International Food Festival

2021 UN Day &

International Food Festival

On 21 October, Wellington pupils, parents and teachers came together to celebrate the diversity of our community once again with the annual United Nations Day and International Food Festival.

Both are traditions at Wellington College International Shanghai and part of our long-held aspiration of creating a diverse, caring and supportive international community. The day is an opportunity for our community members to celebrate both what makes us unique as well as what we have in common. It is also a fun way to help our pupils learn how to communicate and think across cultures.

The festivities commenced on the sports field with our United Nations parade. Wellingtonians represented their home countries in a procession on the track. Many wore outfits unique to their respective cultures. Overhead, the flags of more than 45 nations and territories waved in the wind as cheers and anthems filled the air.

After the parade concluded, the event quickly moved into the Dome, where culinary creations from all over the world awaited. Participants had the chance to sample a vast spread of signature snacks, drinks and other delicacies prepared and shared by our fellow community members.

Food and a community’s cuisine speak of a people's history, customs and shared sense of identity. It is shorthand for what makes a culture unique. But it is also a constant reminder of what we all have in common. We may use different ingredients. We may employ different cooking techniques. But we all love to eat. It is, quite possibly, humanity's greatest common denominator.

Most importantly, sharing food is a powerful expression of Kindness, one of the key Wellington Values. When we prepare food for others, we engage in a deep act of service. We are offering our time and energy so that someone else may be nourished and perhaps learn something new about the world around them. We are confident that this spirit of Kindness and Inclusivity will continue to be driving forces in the Wellington Community, and we cannot wait to taste what everybody serves up next year!
