In case you missed it: September
It is hard to believe it, but September, the first month of the academic year is already over. From the first day of school to house competitions, these past four weeks, have been a whirlwind of activity. If you blinked, you might have missed something. So, here is a round-up of September’s highlights.
Our staff kicked off the academic year with our annual Town Hall meeting. Wellington College China Founder and Chairman Joy Qiao welcomed all new and returning staff and presented her future vision for our group of schools. We also celebrated several teachers and staff who have reached the five-year milestone in their Welllington Shanghai tenure. Congratulations and thank you for half decade of dedication and hard work!
The first week back to school is always full of excitement, but this year we had the added fun of our annual Mid-Autumn festivities. As always, we adorned the entrance with our rabbit and moon. Our Music Department got involved as well, treating us to live performances of classical Chinese music on the guzheng. Year 6 pupil Daniel created some stunning works of Mid-Autumn-inspired art that were displayed in the main lobby. Many a mooncake was enjoyed by all, of course. More importantly, though, these celebrations presented many opportunities for learning across several subjects, from Chinese culture and history to planetary science to PE.
Wellingtonians had a need for speed with Wellington’s first-ever Amazon Web Services DeepRacer meet. This was an opportunity for our budding computer scientists to put their machine learning skills to the test, programming state-of-the-art 1/18 scale model racecars equipped with sensors to run independently on a track.
Our inaugural house dodgeball competition saw Lower Prep pupils dodging, ducking, dipping, diving… and dodging for house glory. This competition was part of our whole-College evolution of the house system. Soon after, our Upper Prep and Senior School pupils followed up with their house tennis competition. These were the first of many opportunities for our pupils in all year groups to shine in activities ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, from the physically demanding to the mind-bending. Stay tuned. We have an action-packed calendar of competitions and activities throughout the year.
Our parent and teacher organisation, Friends of Wellington (FOW) welcomed the newest members of the Wellington Family with its first Coffee Morning of the academic year. This was an opportunity for new Wellington parents to chat, connect and learn how they can get involved in the College community. This will be the first of many such meetups to take place throughout the academic year, so if you missed this one, there will plenty of opportunities in the coming months.
We wish you all a happy Golden Week holiday with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming you back rested and restored.
