In case you missed it: December
December saw Wellingtonians getting into the holiday spirit with songs, spellbinding drama performances and charity activities. It was also the month we celebrated Kindness, which has been reflected in many ways this busy month, here is a look at what you missed.
As the mercury dropped, both our pupil and parent choirs have been warming hearts and spreading holiday cheer at venues all around Shanghai. You may have seen them serenading tree-lighting ceremonies in places like Harrod’s, JW Marriott, St. Regis and at our Qiantan neighbour, Taikoo Li.
Wellington community members gathered in the College Esplanade to welcome in the festive season with our annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony. Hearts were warmed with hot cocoa, mulled wine and holiday carols sung by all present. Wellington staff vocalists led the chorus to which followed by the giving of hampers to those that have supported the community over the past term.
After overcoming some extraneous challenges, our Upper Prep production of Julius Caesar finally took place in our Black Box Theatre. The children put on a stellar performance of this Shakespeare classic. A cast of over 30 pupils joined forces with the Upper Prep band 'Anonymity' to perform their radical, fresh and contemporary interpretation of the play. This is the second performance in our series of challenging interpretations of Shakespeare's classics, following on from the success of Macbeth last year. It was once again proof that the Bard is as relevant as ever and that our talented, passionate pupils can take on some challenging texts.
Wellington parent association, Friends of Wellington are a key pillar of driving sustainable development at the College and the force behind ensuring many quality clothes, apparel, bags, and books find new homes after being ‘pre-loved’ whilst raising funds for charity. Led by Silke and a team of wonderful volunteers, they recently received their own uniforms, looking smart and ready to care for the community and environment.
Apropos of Kindness Month, our Senior School pupils planned and organised a House Charity Vote. It was several days of fun and informative activities in which pupils learned about all of the charities and causes available for them to support and engage with represented by each of our houses. From Heart to Heart to Food for the Hungry to Oceana, the week culminated in a whole College vote for the charity they prefer to support for the rest of the academic year, with house points going to the houses which garnered the most votes!
