Hear us roar! The term in sport
Daniel Tuitt
It has been an incredible term for sport at Wellington Shanghai. Our pupil athletes have gone from strength to strength both at the individual and team levels. What’s more, the College has become a sporting destination, hosting several high-profile competitions and events.
Developing pupil talent and leadership
We have redoubled our efforts to develop the next generation of athletic talent at Wellington, paying special attention to our future basketball and volleyball stars. Our programme has been providing invaluable opportunities for our Primary and Secondary pupils to hone their skills and fuel their passions. We have also been giving our Primary-aged pupils even more opportunities to develop their football skills. Meanwhile, the merger of the CISSA and SISAC conferences has created clearer pathways for our pupils to progress from Primary to Secondary school sports. It is truly rewarding to see the steady stream of talented young athletes this is producing for our core sports teams.
Our Sports Committee has also been playing an active role in sports leadership, facilitating scoring and officiating at many sporting events. Along the way, they have been raising money for charity, supporting local vendors and assisting to build a better community.
Shining on the big stage
When it comes to high-profile competitions, our Aqualions have been making big waves, representing their countries with pride at the Swimming World Cup. The inaugural Wellington College International Shanghai invitationals in volleyball and football were a huge success, raising the school's profile across China and beyond. But the real icing on the cake was our participation and hosting of the Wellington College China Group events in football, basketball, swimming and tennis. What an incredible achievement!
Dominating on all fronts
We have seen a lot of progress and success in our core sports. Our U19 volleyball team reigned supreme in the Gold Division and our U19 boys team wone the SSSA Division 2 championship. These victories are the result of our dedicated coaches and our strategic development in sports provision, not to mention the hard work and commitment of our pupil athletes!
Meanwhile, our golf and tennis teams have been quietly dominating the UTR and other tournaments, while our partnership with clubs like ZYY-volleyball, and 5-Star basketball is providing invaluable support and development opportunities for our affiliated sports teams.
Also, the TPA Lions — our first set of U7, U8 and U10 affiliated football teams — are carving out a reputation as a real force to be reckoned with in the Y-League.
Expanding our horizons
Not content to rest on our laurels, we've also been expanding our sports provision, introducing Wex programmes in badminton and gymnastics. And huge congratulations are in order for our three new sports Fellows - Ettore (swimming), Michaela (equestrian) and Shannon (swimming). Way to go!
Building for the future
Finally, the school has been working hard behind the scenes, with targeted recruitment of Primary staff with core sports specialisms, the introduction of the Swim England accreditation, touch rugby in the year 6 curriculum, and a raft of new sports and activities for our older pupils. The future is looking brighter than ever for Wellington's sporting prowess.
Here's to continued success in the terms to come!
