For the second year in a row, Wellington brought the Dragon Boat tradition to life in a most innovative way - with the Dragon Boat Triathlon!

Pupils and staff, representing their houses, spent the day in three competitive events.

In the morning they did Dragon Boat cultural quizzes, at noon they raced inflatable Dragon Boats on land, and finally they crowned the day with the ultimate showdown: a cardboard Dragon Boat race in our pool!

Crowning the day was the grand finale - the cardboard Dragon Boat race!

Armed with cardboard, bamboo, and duct tape, our young engineers applied Design and Technology (DT) principles – think triangular bracing and buoyancy calculations – to create functional Dragon Boats capable of carrying paddlers.

The challenge? Race their boat across the school pool without sinking!

How to make a functional Dragon Boat out of cardboard, you ask? Great question! The design innovation process started a full week before the event.

Day 1

The process launches as each house sketched, debated, and dreamed up their perfect boat design.

The Race

The championship was packed with suspense, surprises, and of course, a few memorable capsizes.

The true reward is not the race itself, but the journey – from first sketch to final splash – where collaboration, creativity, and perseverance bring vision to life.

More than a race, this was hands-on learning at its best – strengthening community spirit, turning theory into practice, and creating unforgettable memories with every splash!

Wellington Shanghai wishes you a safe and happy Dragon Boat Festival!
