Class of 2022 soar with top-ranked university offers
Stephen Tippen
It is our pleasure to update you with the current university offers/acceptances that our 2022 Leavers have so far achieved. It is set to be another incredibly successful year for our year 13 pupils. Overall, with many decisions still outstanding, approximately 20% of our leaving cohort have achieved an offer from a top 10 ranked university. Furthermore, over 40% have achieved an offer from a top 30 ranked university (QS World Rankings 2022). What is incredibly pleasing is that these offers have been achieved from traditionally some of the most competitive of courses — ranging from Medicine, Engineering and Maths to Law and Economics. As a school and a university guidance team, you know that you are doing something right when one of your pupils gets an offer to study Law at Cambridge or study performing arts at NYU Tisch! From bitter experience I can assure you — success in these areas is not easy!
What I enjoy particularly about working at Wellington is the truly international nature of our pupils’ aspirations. Whereas some schools specialise in sending pupils to a particular destination, Wellington has a track record of supporting applications to a range of countries. Pupils consistently achieve outstanding results from universities across the globe (typically from over 20 different destinations). I take great delight every year from supporting those applying to destinations where I have not previously sent pupils — this year it is Finland and Estonia! It is also gratifying to see our continuing success amongst more niche institutions with offers from top Art Colleges, such as University of Arts London (UAL) and School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the often overlooked but incredibly competitive liberal arts colleges such as Swarthmore.
The global nature of the success of Wellington pupils, from Chicago and UCLA to Imperial, Amsterdam and the University of Hong Kong, is no accident. It is the product of the bespoke destination-specific preparation programmes set up by the University Guidance Team as part of the ‘Higher Education Pathway’ followed by all Senior School pupils. This includes dedicated essay workshops, one-on-one review sessions and subsidised in-house SAT training sessions with Saturday morning mock exams for pupils applying to the US. Furthermore, applicants to Oxford and Cambridge receive dedicated support from expert trainers for the various post-application admissions tests alongside interview training and several mock interviews provided internally and with external experts.
This is just a sample of some of the support open to pupils applying to specific destinations. If I had to sum up Wellington’s approach to university guidance in one word, it would be ‘individual’. This is often what is lost in the purely statistical summary of university offers. It is ultimately the individual attention that pupils receive from our team of university guidance counsellors and subject experts, together with the hard work and dedication of our wonderful pupils, which makes such success a reality.
