Once again, we celebrated what makes Wellington such a special place with our annual United Nations Day and International Food Festival. This year's festivities, however, took on even greater significance as we commemorate 10 years of building a global community

The festivities commenced on Thursday 24 October with the familiar United Nations parade, as Wellingtonians represented their home countries in a procession around the sports field. This year, however, a new flag joined the parade – that of our Friends of Wellington community. This addition was a fitting symbol of the collaborative spirit that has been integral to Wellington's growth over the past decade.

After the parade, the event moved into the Dome. Culinary creations from around the world awaited, pupils had the chance to sample a vast spread of signature snacks, drinks and other delicacies prepared and shared by their fellow community members. This also proved to be teaching opportunity for many of our Primary School children who rated each food stand according to its sustainability practices. Pupils, parents and teachers then came together for a picnic lunch on the Astroturf pitch to further strengthen the bonds that define the Wellington family.

"The International Food Festival and UN Day Parade are not just celebrations of diversity, but a true reflection of the inclusive, globally-minded community we've built at Wellington over the past decade," said Brendon Fulton, Master of Wellington Shanghai. "Seeing our pupils, parents and teachers come together to share their cultures and traditions is a testament to the spirit of kindness and unity that defines our school."

Felix Zhang, a Chairman of the Friends of Wellington and founding parent, added: "As a parent, it's been incredible to witness the growth of this community. The International Food Festival gives our children the opportunity to learn about the world around them in the most delicious way possible. It's a reminder that when we come together and embrace our differences, we can create something truly special."

Alex, Head of College and a founding pupil in year 13, reflected: "I remember being part of the very first UN Day parade all those years ago. Back then, it was just a small gathering of pupils representing their home countries. To see how it's evolved into this vibrant, school-wide celebration of our global community is truly inspiring."

Food and a community's cuisine speak of a people's history, customs and shared sense of identity. It is a constant reminder of what we all have in common, despite our differences. As Wellington celebrates a decade of building a global community, this fact has never been more evident. Our diverse population has come together to share in each other's cultures and foster a deep appreciation for the richness of the world us.

Most importantly, the International Food Festival is a powerful expression of the Wellington value of kindness. When we prepare food for others, we engage in a deep act of service, offering our time and energy so that someone else may be nourished and maybe even learn something new. This spirit of kindness and inclusivity has been a driving force in the Wellington community for the past 10 years, and it will undoubtedly continue to shape the school's future.
