'Be You. Be a Codebreaker.
Huge congratulations to our year 7-11 mathematicians who performed extremely well in the 2024 FOBISIA Code Breaking Challenge held the in last week of September!
Wellington Shanghai finished first on the leaderboard for Levels 2B, 3 and 4. We particularly would like to highlight our 102 pupils who completed the Level 3 challenge, nearly 70% more than the second place school!
In addition, congratulations go to Evelyn in year 11 who placed 6th overall in the Level 4 — and most difficult — challenge.
In this online event, pupils are challenged to work through a series of codes. Those who crack the codes in a given level are then added to the leaderboard tally. This year there were four levels, with Level 4 being the most difficult.
Each code tests the pupil's ability to think creatively using mathematical concepts they have learnt in class.

Director of Maths
"Code Breaking is one of our favourite annual maths competitions because it really challenges pupils to apply their mathematical knowledge in new and unfamiliar contexts, thus demonstrating their deep, conceptual knowledge of maths, which is the most important goal of our maths programme at Wellington," shares Anja Mori, Director of Maths at Wellington College International Shanghai.
"The Code Breaking Challenge requires different skill sets than curriculum maths and highlights the diversity of mathematics application in the real world. It really brings out our pupils' curiosity and gives opportunities for all of them to shine."
This year was one of the biggest ever for the Code Breaking Challenge with over 120 schools participating from around Asia. We applaud all of our pupils who participated and spent the week cracking codes.
Be You. Be a Code Breaker!
