An Aqualion was honored for her swimming achievements
Last weekend, a Wellingtonian received regional recognition for her swimming talents. Year 9 pupil Shannon was honoured at the Star of the East 2024 Yangtze River Delta Youth Sports Series Challenge with the ‘Best Breakthrough Award’. The award ceremony was the culmination of an intense and competitive sports series that brought together promising young athletes from the region.
Interview with 'Best Breakthrough Award' winner Shannon
"Shannon's award is a reflection of the growth and development we have seen in our swimming programme at Wellington," said Miguel Alvarado, our Head of Aquatics. "Her achievement demonstrates the high calibre of our student-athletes and the thorough training they receive."
For Shannon, swimming has been a lifelong passion. "I started swimming when I was very young, about 4-5 years old, and from the beginning, there was something freeing about the water. I love that every time I swim, I can push myself to new limits and how swimming teaches me resilience, both mentally and physically."
Winning the ‘Best Breakthrough Award’ is just the latest in a growing collection of achievements for Shannon. Most recently, she competed in the Swimming World Cup, where she made it to the finals. She will soon be representing Malaysia at the Southeast Asian Age Group Championships in Bangkok. We are confident that Shannon will continue to go from strength to strength.
“Our swimming programme is a cornerstone of our athletics provision and is one of the many ways we develop well-rounded pupils,” said Daniel Tuitt, Wellington’s Director of Sport. “It not only promotes physical health through strength and conditioning, but it also teaches essential life skills like resilience, teamwork and discipline, all of which Shannon exhibits in the pool and the classroom. We are immensely proud of her.”
Congratulations, Shannon! Keep up the good work!
