A Primary Chinese programme for every pupil

14 Jan 2025

Wellington College International Shanghai’s Chinese department is committed to providing our children with a truly exceptional language learning experience. From years 1 through 6, we offer a unique curriculum that allows children to study Chinese as a first language, second language or foreign language.

Our Primary School Chinese curriculum is truly unique among international schools. We use a variety of engaging teaching methods and resources to make the learning process fun and effective for our pupils.

For those studying Chinese as a first language, we use the national textbooks published by China’s Ministry of Education as the foundation. But we have also seamlessly integrated these textbooks with project-based learning activities that enable our pupils to enhance their language skills and expression through interdisciplinary exploration. Taking this approach not only strengthens their proficiency in the language but also cultivates essential critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Our second-language Chinese programme, on the other hand, focuses on improving pupils' listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities with an inquiry-based approach. By fostering an environment of active learning and discovery, we empower these pupils to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the language.

For those learning Chinese as a foreign language, our curriculum places a strong emphasis on developing strong language skills and expressiveness. This leads to impressive results on standardised exams. This rigorous academic focus is complemented by the integration of rich cultural elements into the learning experience.

From celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival to the Dragon Boat Festival and Chinese New Year, our pupils can immerse themselves in the vibrant traditions of Chinese culture. This allows them to experience Chinese through immersion and offer surprise to teachers, parents, and themselves at their personal development and applications in daily life.

By fostering a love for language learning and cultural exploration, the Chinese department at Wellington College International Shanghai is not only equipping our pupils with valuable linguistic skills but also instilling a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich tapestry of Chinese heritage.
