Wellington College International Shanghai school's winter recap

The winter season’s festivities started early this year with a special Winter Concert. The College Theatre was filled with both eager audience members and delightful music, as pupils gave the festive period at Wellington a rousing start.
Once again the College Dome became Wellington’s annual Winter Wonderland, as the Friends of Wellington delivered a bazaar packed to the rafters with Christmas goodies. This year’s event was bigger and better than ever, with over 100 seasonal and unique gift vendors, offering up everything from mulled wine and hearty Christmas treats to handcrafted decorations, clothes, jewellery and dozens of other excellent gift ideas. There were also plenty of fun activities for our younger children, such as the bouncy castles, mini-skiing, crafts, the very popular snow zone and many more.
What’s Christmas without a tree to act as the focal point for the festivities? It really began to feel Christmassy on the 5th of December at what has become an annual Christmas tradition at Wellington – the lighting of the tree on the College Esplanade. The Friends of Wellington served mulled wine, hot chocolate and home baked cookies while the Prep School Christmas Choir led the evening with carols by candlelight.
Immediately following the tree lighting Wellington brought back this year a British Winter holiday tradition – pantomime. An incredibly talented group of 30 Upper Prep pupils helped bring alive the fun-filled story of true love and the acceptance of being different.
Year 1 took to the stage first where they told the story of Apple the pony, who found a mysterious hat! She tried it in autumn, winter, spring and finally summer, the season when it was perfectly fit for purpose. She had lots of help from her fellow farm animals to find out which season was best for her hat with wonderful songs and well rehearsed and delivered lines.
Finally, Year 2 took the stage for their performance of I’m Gonna Shine which was a dazzling musical that followed the origins of the nativity Christmas story. The play starts with Gloria and a group of beautiful stars, who light the way for the three wise men, as they journey through the desert. As Mary, Joseph and the shepherds also make the long journey, we meet Gabriel, the other angels and an angry King Herod. Finally, the play ends in a stable in Bethlehem to celebrate the birth of a special baby.
We hope that our Wellington families had a wonderful time at all of the festive events and as the term closes and we prepare to enjoy the well-earned break, we wish you a very happy holiday and new year. Enjoy the comforts of home, hearth and family, and come back in 2020 refreshed and ready to meet a brand new decade – and term – filled with possibility.
