Meet our new Director of Wellbeing

28 Nov 2016

In 2006, Wellington College introduced ‘Wellbeing’ as a compulsory subject, sitting alongside English, the sciences and maths as part of the core curriculum. In doing so, Wellington became pioneers of positive education, an approach which values the happiness of pupils to the same extent as their academic success. Here in Shanghai, the programme is transferred into an international context, and run across the whole College. Currently specific lessons are delivered to all pupils from year 3 to 13, one hour each fortnight, while specialist Pre Prep staff lead weekly 30 minute sessions coordinated by me and the Deputy Head of Pre-Prep, Ms Alexandra Newell, to our youngest pupils. The aim of a Wellington education is to allow pupils to realise their potential, build strong and positive relationships with others, whilst making a meaningful contribution to their community, both local and global. The Wellbeing programme focuses on developing our pupils through reflection on how to treat others, how to approach challenges and how to manage failure. Alongside the House and Pastoral system, the Wellbeing programme works to promote the flourishing and excellence of the young people. Jo Evans Director of Wellbeing
