Inaugural International Cricket Match at Wellington College International Shanghai
Wellington College was delighted to host two international cricket matches between an MCC Ladies Touring Team and China on 17-19th October. Both games were closely contested with two well-matched teams, China winning on Friday, MCC winning on Saturday, and finally, on Sunday the Shanghai Cricket Club (SCC) played a team from Hong Kong.
Cricket is now firmly established at Wellington with our grounds at an international standard, in line with that at Wellington in the UK. All players and officials were extremely impressed by the quality of Wellington’s facilities and the pitch, which was described by the ex-England captain Mike Gatting (ex-England cricket captain) as the best pitch he had seen in China. Following their visit, Wellington’s Founding Master, Mr David Cook received the following from the president of the SCC: “the success of this weekend, Mike Gatting's presence and his deep interest in developing cricket in Shanghai/China has certainly sparked a new enthusiasm for Cricket in Shanghai. Wellington has a big and critical role to play in making some of the ideas we discussed a reality.”
By using our world-class facilities, teachers, and coaches Wellington is already being recognised as setting new standards for schools in Shanghai.
