Natasha Steyn

Assistant Head (Curriculum & Assessment) | Head of Reception

Natasha is from the east coast of South Africa, where she started her career and gained over nine years’ teaching experience in the Foundation Stage. In 2016, she moved to China where she accrued a further six years’ experience teaching in Early Years and Key Stage 1. She has worked for two years in Jiangsu Province and four years in Shanghai. At her former school she served as an international curriculum leader. During this time, she innovated and implemented an Early Years oral language programme designed to develop practical and expressive communication skills through social interaction and play. She has extensive experience teaching young learners with English as a second language, both in China and South Africa.

She studied education at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. In 2007, she qualified with a bachelor’s degree in education specialising in the foundation-intermediate phase. Whilst working in Shanghai, she decided to pick up the textbooks again and in 2021 completed a master’s degree in education with proficiency in educational leadership through the University of Exeter.

In her free time, Natasha enjoys practising yoga and is currently training to become a yoga instructor with a focus on yin and restorative styles. At home, freshly baked bread has become a hobby, and the new normal, since learning the art of sourdough baking during the last lockdown. She relishes a good book and can often be found reading at one of the many coffeeshops or parks around Shanghai.
