Stephen Tippen
Director of Higher Education and Careers
Steve Tippen has an undergraduate degree from Leeds University and a Masters in Political Philosophy from York University. His academic studies centred upon the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre and the idea of progress within history. However, he lists his academic interests as 'wide and varied'. After the briefest flirtation with the film industry Steve decided that a more worthwhile career could be found in teaching. He attended Manchester University where he trained as a specialist post-16 teacher going on to teach a range of subjects including History, Politics and Philosophy. After many years as an academic Head of Department Steve joined the senior management of a prestigious college in the south of England. As Director of Student Development, he successfully developed a series of unique initiatives to help students gain access to elite universities. Steve, consequently, has developed a wealth of experience in supporting international university applications, especially those to highly competitive institutions and high-demand courses such as Medicine and Law. Steve is a firm believer in the benefits of meticulous preparation and is looking forward to using his experience to help guide students at Wellington through this process. Steve is joined in Shanghai with his partner, a teacher in the Senior School, and their son, who is a pupil in the Prep School. When not researching into the hidden secrets of making successful university applications, Steve likes listening to a wide variety of music, playing scrabble and following the fortunes of his hometown football team, Southampton FC.
