John Joyce

Head of Key Stage 3 English

John's teaching career began in Sunderland at Hylton Red House School, before heading east to work at The British International School of Shanghai, Puxi. There he was Head of Year and taught IB. After a fabulous few years in Shanghai, the opportunity arose to work at St Joseph's Institution International, a top IB school, in Singapore. As much as John loved working at SJII, China was the place he wanted to be. Having visited Guangzhou and liking how green the city was, John knew that a role at The British School of Guangzhou was the right fit for him at that time. After seven years in Guangzhou, John and his young family were ready for a new challenge, and they are looking forward to joining Wellington College.   John earned his degree in Archaeology and English Literature from the University of Wales. This was soon followed by a Masters in Archaeology from Cardiff University. It was while working as a field archaeologist that John realised his true calling as a teacher. He then enrolled in a PGCE in Secondary English at Newcastle University. In his spare time, John has a wide range of interests: mainly physical activities and sharing the world with his young daughter. He loves to read about China including Chinese fiction in English and has been a student of the language for the best part of a decade.
