Michael Johnstone
Head of Year 4 & Year 4 Teacher
Michael started his career in education as an EAL teacher in Kindergarten and elementary grades in Seoul, South Korea. After four years he returned to Canada to attain a second degree in education. He then took a position as a homeroom teacher at an offshore Canadian school in Seoul, where he taught year 2 for two years. He relocated to Shanghai in 2018 to teach year 1 and 3 students at another local international school.
He received a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Ottawa, with a specialization in years 1-7. He is certified through the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).
Michael has a strong interest in literature, particularly the ways in which it both reflects and shapes societies. Like many other international teachers, he enjoys travel and experiencing the diversity of cultures firsthand. He also has an interest in technology, music, photography and science. One of the things he enjoys the most about teaching is sharing these interests with pupils and inspiring children to find their own ways of exploring the world.
