Leaver Interview | Sam, Class of 2022

24 May 2022

The 2021-22 academic year is fast coming to a close. Soon, another class of Wellingtonians will go out into the world to accomplish great things. Until then, some of our 2022 Leavers are reflecting on their time at Wellington and what lies on the road ahead after graduation.

Year 13 pupil Sam has been a Wellingtonian pupil since 2014, our founding year. Since then, he has taken every available opportunity to expand his horizons and step out of his comfort zone. Today, he looks back on eight years of forging friendships and building character both in and out of the classroom.

Room to grow from day one

I have been attending Wellington since 2014. I was just in year 6. I remember on the first day how massive this campus was. I would get lost all the time. Everybody was new, including the teachers.

Building character outside the classroom

Anytime we travelled was a great memory, but I think my favourite was when we went to Beijing for a rugby tournament. I was able to spend the day playing my favourite sport, spending time with my friends and meeting people from other schools. The school has also taken us on trips to Anilao in the Philippines, where we learned scuba diving. It was a really unique experience, and I enjoyed it. Although it has been a few years, I have open water, advanced open water and rescue diver certifications.

Also, my Duke of Edinburgh expedition was quite a character-building experience. This was the first time I went days without luxuries such as my phone, a bed, a shower or even good food. I remember having to learn new skills, such as triangulation and setting up a tent, which I had never done before.

A clear path to success

I think Wellington has provided a lot of academic support and guidance, which were able to get me where I wanted to be, academically. There were also lots of career talks, which made my goals clearer and helped me decide what I wanted to study at university.

A look at the road ahead

My first task after leaving Wellington is to get my bachelor’s degree in biomedicine/biomedical science and see where it goes from there. There are quite a few things I am interested in pursuing, so I am still deciding on what career path to take.
