Boys narrowly lose out in final at Wellington College U18 boys football tournament

07 Mar 2017
Last weekend, Wellington College International Shanghai hosted the U18 boys football tournament. The weather smiled on us and the glorious sunshine helped produce the right conditions for some truly excellent football. Our boys were keen to build on their earlier success in the SISAC league And they started the round robin tournament with style, achieving a resounding 4-0 win over SHISD with a hat-trick from Max and one goal from Ollie. This was followed by another four goals and another clean sheet against YK Pao. The goal scorers on this occasion were Olly, Gerrard and Max. The third game proved to be a tighter affair, the tournament’s eventual bronze medalists KCIS were beaten one-nil, thanks to an excellent goal scored by Olly. The fourth and fifth game saw the boys bag another two victories, both scorelines at 2-0 over SQD and SUISW as Max extended his goal scoring streak with one in each game and Alex and Gerrard claiming the rest. The final group match proved to be the dress rehearsal for the final. LFS, also on maximum points and joint top with Wellington College, were secured a spot in the final (where first would play second). A very tense match resulted in a 0-0 draw as neither team gave anything away. A special mention goes to Zach for making some outstanding saves and keeping six clean sheets in a row. The final was where the boys suffered their first defeat of the day, losing out 2-0 in a very even game. Overall, the boys gave an outstanding performance and another special mention goes to Max who was awarded player of the tournament as voted for by each coach on the day.
