Survival and rescue skill lessons – Key Stage 2

20 Jun 2015
This week in swimming lessons we took a break from developing our swimming skills to focus on survival and rescue skills. With summer fast approaching and many of us heading off for holidays, the Aquatics Department took the time to teach the students of KS2 a few important skills to keep them safe when they are near the water over the summer. The students learnt H.E.L.P a key skill to staying warm and buoyant whilst awaiting rescue if ever stranded at sea. They also learned about the different styles of treading water, working our which method worked best for them, conserving energy and staying afloat while again waiting to be rescued in an emergency. The students also learned a giant stride entry; this is a key rescue skill if you ever need to enter murky unfamiliar water to help save a person in distress. The pupils have lots of fun jumping in and out of the pool and trying out new skills but there was a serious message behind the lessons. The Aquatics Department hopes everyone has an enjoyable summer and that everyone stays safe around the water.
