Pupil Leadership Team Q&A with UK Deputy Consul General

13 Mar 2025

This February, we had the privilege of welcoming Ms Barbara Amono-Oceng, the British Deputy Consul-General of Shanghai, to Wellington College International Shanghai. It was an opportunity to hear her insights into the world of diplomacy as well as ideas of sustainability or charity projects that our pupil committees could potentially organise in the future.

Her visit began with a brief pupil-led of our campus on the way to a Q&A session with our Pupil Leadership Team and faculty members. The discussion covered a range of topics, like her career, life, the challenges of working in diplomacy, the future of diplomacy in the face of digital communication technology and AI, as well as sustainability and charity projects.

Here are some examples of the questions asked during the Q&A:

  • What inspired you to pursue a career in diplomacy, and how did you get started?

  • What has been the most rewarding or challenging experience in your diplomatic career?

  • Have you had to navigate any particularly difficult diplomatic situations, and how did you handle them?

  • What key skills do you think are essential for someone pursuing a career in diplomacy?

  • Can you share successful pupil-led sustainability projects in the UK?

  • How do you see the role of diplomacy evolving in the next 10 to 20 years, especially with the rise of digital communication and social media?

From this visit, our Wellington pupils gained a deeper understanding of diplomacy as a profession and the diverse responsibilities and challenges that diplomats require to navigate daily. Ms Amono-Oceng’s insights helped to correct the common misconception that diplomacy is solely about high-stakes negotiations and international debates, revealing instead the multifaceted nature of the role—one that involves relationship-building, problem-solving, and adaptability in an ever-changing global landscape.

Furthermore, her personal journey of transitioning into diplomacy from a background unrelated to international relations was particularly inspiring, demonstrating that career paths are rarely linear and that skills such as communication can open unexpected opportunities. Her discussion on sustainability and charity projects also provided valuable ideas for our own pupil-led initiatives.
