What inspired the choice of The Little Mermaid as this year’s school musical, and what do you hope the pupils take away from it?
The choice of The Little Mermaid as this year’s Y5/Y6 production was inspired by its timeless themes of curiosity, courage, and self-discovery—qualities we hope to nurture in our pupils. The story encourages stepping out of one’s comfort zone, embracing differences, and pursuing dreams despite challenges.
How did you approach casting and rehearsals to help pupils grow in confidence and creativity—both on stage and behind the scenes?
At Wellington our drama department believe every child should have the chance to audition. Our inclusive auditions in the primary school are low-pressure and welcoming. We let pupils know there are no "wrong" choices we encourage them to take risks and just have a go.
We assign roles based on pupil’ s strengths while gently pushing them out of their comfort zones. For less confident pupils, smaller but meaningful roles can build confidence gradually.

What have been some of the biggest challenges (and triumphs!) in bringing this underwater world to life on stage?
We are incredibly fortunate to have Assistant Head of Curriculum and Assessment and Director of Studies, Mr. Hicks' exceptional talents. His stunning digital backdrops seamlessly merge the live performances on stage with an entirely new dimension, elevating the production to breathtaking heights. Despite the many technical challenges of staging this underwater spectacle, the heart of the story -Aquaria’s yearning for love and freedom shines through, captivating audiences and moving them to laughter, tears, and cheers.

Performing isn’t just about singing, dancing, and acting—it’s a transformative experience that shapes pupils into resilient, collaborative, and confident individuals. At Wellington, our Performing Arts curriculum goes beyond the classroom, equipping pupils with skills for academic success, artistic careers, and personal growth.
Why Wellingtonians Stand Out:
Unforgettable Memories: Performing on Wellington’s grand stage forges lifelong bonds and unforgettable moments.
A Culture of Support: On and off stage, we uplift one another, creating a close-knit, family-like community.
Growth Through Challenge: Rehearsals blend hard work and joy, showing that dedication leads to success.
The Grand Finale: A dazzling performance where every pupil shines—not just as a performer, but as a leader and team player.
Can you share a moment during the rehearsal process that really captured the spirit of Wellington’s performing arts community?
During rehearsals energy is key! Ms. Hammond , Ms. Quinlin, Mr Hicks and I have so much fun with the cast. We foster a space where everyone feels encouraged to explore, make mistakes, and grow. Those moments of fun and camaraderie—whether it’s a funny improvisation, a breakthrough in a tricky scene, or simply celebrating small wins together—are what make performing arts so magical.
